It is a 21 km long route passes through the Western Ghats. It was completed in the year 1907. The train’s journey starts from Neral a city near Pune in the foothills of Western Ghats. It takes two and a half hours to complete this journey to Matheran. In this Journey, You pass through the dense forests of the Western Ghats with mind-boggling scenic views. Matheran Hill Railway is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites(according to Wikipedia). Matheran is situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 800 m. You should specially visit this route in Monsoon season because western ghat shows its trues beauty during the rainy season.

This train ride passes through 971 uniquely designed bridges and two tunnels. the Kangra toy train links Pathankot to Joginder Nagar Himachal Pradesh. It offers amazing scenic views throughout the journey. The work on this line started in 1926. With 163 km of narrow gauge tracks, It is the longest mountain railway route in India. After the completion in 1929, it was the last mountain railways to be built by Britishers in India. Kangra valley is known for its natural beauty and many Hindu Shrines. This railway is famous as ‘The toy train’. This route is 88 km long, connecting Siliguri city to Darjeeling hill station. It is a narrow-gauge track and the elevation of the tracks starts at 100m in Siliguri and rises to about 2,200 m at Darjeeling. The highest elevation is at Ghoom station at 2,300 m. Work on this route started in 1879 and completed in 1881. This route has the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site in the condition that steam locomotives would continue to be used. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was built by Britishers to serve the officials and the tea gardens of Darjeeling. This is one of the oldest train routes in India. The steam train goes through breathtaking valleys, this train journey promises you an unforgettable ride passing through 505 bridges, and consist of historical aura along the way. The Kalka Shimla Railway line was constructed in 1903 to serve the summer capital of British India and the headquarters of the British Army in India. A journey on this railway is a unique experience as one passes through the majestic Himalayas, and
through the lush green valleys embellished with pine and oak trees. It is a 95.66 Kms long line with 103 tunnels and 864 bridges. The last tunnel 103 is believed to be the longest and one of the most haunted tunnels in India. It takes five hours to cover the distance between Kalka to Shimla. Believe me, It will one of the most beautiful experiences of nature you could have.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

It is a 46 Kms meter gauge line, It connects the town of Mettupalayam with the hill station of Udagamandalam (Ooty). A unique feature of this line, which is still fully operational, is that its oldest and steepest track uses rack and pinion technology (According to Wikipedia). This line has 208 curves, 16 tunnels, and 250 bridges, and its 46 km long journey takes 4 hours and 50 minutes to complete. The train is pulled up with the help of gears and levers present between the tracks. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2005.
And the famous chhaiyan-chhaiyan song of Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan was shot on this route.

Even there are many new lines under construction such as the Jammu-Baramula line is under construction it has the world’s tallest railway bridge. The Bilaspur-Leh line after construction it will be the world’s highest railway line, Definitely, we will discuss that in another article.
